In 1903, the German scientist Gottfried Merzbacher first discovered the lake during his expedition to Khan Tengri.

The expedition came across a lake at an altitude of 3500 meters above sea level, sandwiched between two branches of a glacier and a surface covered with icebergs. The lake suddenly dried up, in front of the members of the expedition. Another group of researchers, about 28 years later, witnessed approximately the same case. To their surprise, the lake disappeared, leaving huge chunks of ice at the bottom. Part of the expedition returned the following year to find the lake refilled.
Lake Merzbacher is perhaps the most famous of the “disappearing lakes”, but there are several other similar phenomena in the world. Iceland, Switzerland and the island of Greenland have similar lakes, and only Lake Merzbacher seems to be so accurate in timing of its drains.
No scientific expedition can be carried out in that place, there is no way to transport equipment for research. Therefore, the lake will never reveal its secrets!
The artist was in his childhood with his father in these places, was struck by blocks of ice surrounded by mountains and the history of this lake. Then childhood impressions were embodied in several paintings where the water was in the state of ice. In this picture, water has two states of liquid and solid ice, and taking into account the sudden appearance and disappearance of water, a symbol of the infinity of the mystery of existence appears in this place.

I wrote this work from memory, from the impressions of a youth trip to the mountains and to Lake Merzbacher. It is located at an altitude of 3500 meters above sea level, between two branches of the glacier. The mysterious mountain lake itself is closely connected with the theme of the disappearing world, which disappears, but also appears with a certain regularity. In the picture, it is just present, which gives rise to optimism and joy. The same feeling enhances the dawn splendor of the great mountain. I wanted to express my delight in beautiful, albeit fickle beauty in my work.
